He remembered every quote, and it was one of the few impressions I actually really liked my Dad doing (his attempts to recreate Ivor the Engine, for some reason, sent me into paroxysms of terror. I can remember the way Dad described him, the way he described old friends who lived an ocean away. The one character Dad really zeroed in on, and the one we have always held dearest to our hearts, was Marvin. I finally understood what it would be like if humans were in space. I was in love immediately: it felt like I was listening to awkward, emotionally stunted British weirdos being forced to recreate story lines from my parent’s twin loves of Star Trek and Star Wars. He told me all about it, lured me in, and then put it on. I think it is still one of the things Mum hates most about my father to this day.īut there, all three of us in one terrible room, Dad introduced me to Hitchhikers because I wanted something to listen to as I fell asleep. ![]() Instead he booked us into a one star hotel overrun with feral cats and where I got to see my first ever cockroach. The conference was in the Four Seasons – two words that reek of glamour to a family from a village in Dorset – but Dad wasn’t going to pay for three people to stay there. Not one for a family vacation anywhere outside of the Peak District, Dad had to go to a conference in Cyprus, and Mum had weaseled our way in there. “I was in love immediately: it felt like I was listening to awkward, emotionally stunted British weirdos being forced to recreate story lines from my parent’s twin loves of Star Trek and Star Wars.” It was on a family holiday in maybe 2000, and it is safe to say he had made an absolute pig’s ear of it. One of my clearest memories of me with my Dad is when he introduced me to Hitchhikers.
